GDPR penalties and enforcement

The General Data protection regulation(GDPR) is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing from workers who live in  and outside the European union.The  GDPR is the strongest privacy and security law in the world.It was adopted in 2016 and entered into application on May 25th 2018.

Penalty #1 Meta $1.2 billion worth of fines.

In May 2023,  Ireland’s Data protection commission gave a 1.2 million dollar fine to facebook owner Meta.The gigantic fine related to the European Facebook user data to the United States without good enough protection from Washington’s intelligence agencies. Meta also was ordered to suspend the transfer of user data between the EU and the United States.Facebook has millions of users in Europe. So the volume of personal data transferred is massive.The strong fine is a signal to other organizations that serious infringements have far-reaching consequences.

Amazon GDPR fines $888 million.

The luxembourg national commission for data protection(CNDP) gave out an 888 million fine to Amazon.The fine was issued due to a complaint filed by 10,000 people against Amazon in May 2018 through a French privacy rights that promotes and defends fundamental freedoms in the digital world.The CNPD started an investigation into how Amazon personal data from its customers. The investigation found infringements regarding Amazon’s targeting system that was carried out without consent.

Meta GDPR fine $405 Million 

On September 5,2022 Ireland’s Data Protection Commision (DPC) gave out a $405 million fine to Meta Ireland. The fine concerns the lawfulness of processing children’s personal data following the legal bases of performance of a contract and legitimate interest. The DPC’s examination focused on teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17, the operation of Instagram business accounts, and how such accounts automatically displayed children’s contact information(Email addresses and/or phone numbers) publicly. According to the DPC, Meta failed to provide child users with information using clear and plain language, lacking  appropriate technical and organizational measures.It also failed to conduct a data protection impacts assessment where processing was likely to result in a high risk to the rights and freedoms of child users.
